On December 1st, World AIDS Day, 2009 the students, staff, parents at James Weldon Johnson Academy PS/MS 57 in Manhattan took a stand to support the fight against HIV/AIDS. The entire school community along with City Year wore red ribbons and joined hands on every floor of the school to say 'We care and support the cause!' We conducted a brief commemoration and moment of silence. The sight was amazing and a heartfelt effort by all of the students from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. During this time, the Principale Israel Soto read a statement of facts prepared for the event, while Alicia Keys' song played in the background. To the organization of Ms Camiolo, the assistant principal and Ms. Hudson, a teacher, the entire school community banded together to raise the sum of $600.00 for Keep a Child Alive. The thing that makes this community so significant is that these are children of East Harlem community who are making a difference with their pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars.
